A federal judge has ruled President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hexeth violated federal laws

when they use the military to help carry out law enforcement activities in Los Angeles over the summer.

Trump deployed thousands of federalized California National Guard members and U.S.

Marines to provide protection to federal agents during an aggressive immigration crackdown in June

and July. The judge said the move breached the Posse Comitatis Act, a 19th century law

that generally prohibits the use of troops for domestic law enforcement purposes.

The judge also blocked Trump and Hexeth from using troops there for, quote, arrests,

searches, siegers, and other law enforcement measures.

But the block only applies to California, and the judge paused that part of his ruling until next Friday,

to give the administration time to appeal it.

Congress returns from recess today, and it's facing a jam-packed and politically bruising fall,

with major fights expected on government funding, the Jeffrey Epstein files, and President Donald Trump's policing push.
