Summary

Selfishness is one of those quiet sins that can easily slip into our hearts and homes. It often hides behind good intentions or small excuses, but God’s Word doesn’t leave us there. In this episode, we’ll look at what the Bible says about selfishness and how the gospel frees us to love others with the heart of Christ. We’ll spend time in Philippians 2 and talk about what it means to deny ourselves daily, serve as Jesus served, and find joy in living for Him. My prayer is that this conversation helps you see the everyday moments like folding laundry, forgiving, listening, and serving as ways to love others and bring glory to the Lord. We're going to spend some time talking about a sin that I think touches every one of our hearts,

Killing the Sin of Selfishness. It's one that can hide pretty easily in plain sight sometimes,

and it's one of those sins that Jerry Bridges

referred to in his book I highly recommend as respectable. So that's from his book,

Respectable Sins. It can creep into our thoughts, our homes, our service to others,

but God's word gives us hope because in Christ, we're not left to our selfishness. We can learn by the

power of the Holy Spirit at work in us to live in humility and love that honors the Lord.

So let's begin. Let's look at 2 Timothy 3. I'm going to read here through verses 1 through 5,

where Paul gives a description of the last days.

1:28.7

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty, for people will

be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents,

1:41.2

ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control,

brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit,

lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying

its power, avoid such people. Well, you know that lovers of self part that starts

there at the beginning of it? Sometimes I sadly see myself on that more than I'd like to. I can be

really quick to protect my time or my comfort or my plans. It can show up in small ways, simple,
