Based on a true story is a technique that many horror movies use to add that extra bit of terror to their movies. Ex. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But anyone who is a fan of horror movies knows that while that movie is based on Ed Gein, there is no Texas family of cannibals out there. Nonetheless, based on true story will always be a great device to get an audience to listen. But what are the real stories that inspire these camp fire tales? And much like the case with Ed Gein, isn't the reality of it much more frightening? I guess that's what keeps us coming back to these stories. It's up to us individually to decide what scares us more... the tale or the true story.
