Summary

Nearly a week after the disastrous presidential debate, more Democrats are going on the record to suggest President Biden step aside and let another candidate be the nominee for president in 2024. After prominent Democrats called questions about Biden’s mental acuity “valid,” a cascade of other voices echoed the sentiment. But that introduces a potentially more complicated question: if not Biden, who? Playbook co-authors Rachael Bade and Eugene Daniels take stock of the Democratic disarray.

Hey, good morning. I'm Playbook co-author Eugene Daniels. It's Wednesday, July 3rd.

0:09.1

That painful feeling in your neck is what doctors would call political whiplash. The speed at which Democrats have become emboldened and begun saying what they've said behind closed doors to us and a lot of our colleagues

0:22.9

in the media is mind-blowing. There's been a bit of a cascade of folks speaking out with their

0:30.2

names on the line, which is something we hadn't seen up until this point. And on Tuesday,

0:35.6

former Speaker Nancy Pelosi opened something of a damn of prominent

0:39.5

Democrats openly questioning Biden's strength when she said this on MSNBC.

0:44.1

Now, again, I think it's a legitimate question to say, is this an episode or is this a condition?

0:52.0

Joining me now to discuss that and what seems like the very, very rocky road ahead is co-author

0:58.1

of playbook Rachel Bade. Good morning, Rachel.

1:01.2

Hey, Eugene. Oh, my gosh. What a mess. Such a disaster. Dems and disarray. What do you?

1:07.2

Okay. It's actually Dems and disarray this time. It's like, I know we get a lot of shit from

1:13.5

Democrats when we say that, but this is real disarray. I want to start with the Pelosi comments.

1:19.2

She kind of walked them back a little bit, said that, you know, she's going to be there on his inauguration in 2025.

1:26.4

But this was hours later. And by that time,

1:30.2

you already kind of create a permission structure for people to go further than they maybe would

1:35.3

have otherwise. How big of a deal was it for her to say this? Oh, my gosh. I mean, it's huge.

1:41.2

And it absolutely was calculated. And she knew what she was doing when she went on TV and said this. I mean, it's huge. And it absolutely was calculated and she knew what she was doing when she went on TV and said this. I mean, Nancy Pelosi is one of those leaders that she just doesn't go off talking point. Even when she's not telling the whole truth, she's saying, oh, you know, Democrats are united and we're going to pass this bill, even though we're all like, no, you're not, you're fighting, that bill is going down. Pelosi is not one of those people that goes out and says candidly what's going on behind the scenes. She tries to keep everyone together. So the fact that she waited a couple days and then went on TV and said this, absolutely. Like you said, it gives a green light to people.

2:18.9

And I think what she did was even though she had that cleanup statement, you're right,

2:21.9

she sort of blessed Democrats to push back on the campaign that is trying to gaslight everyone

2:26.6

and say, look, these are legitimate questions. I mean, the thing that I think is really

2:30.2

interesting is that the administration, this campaign typically don't adjust, right?

2:35.6

But they have added things to the schedule. They're doing a little bit more travel. He's
