Summary

Congress returns today after time off for the Fourth of July, but it is the forthcoming presidential election that is the only thing anyone is talking about. More and more Democrats are coming out of the woodwork to suggest President Joe Biden step aside and pass the baton to another candidate to run in November. But who, if anyone, actually has influence over the decision? Playbook co-author Rachael Bade walks through what she is watching.

Hey y'all, I'm playbook co-author Rachel Bade. It's Monday, July 8th, and once again, there is only one conversation driving the day.

0:11.8

It's, yes, the Democratic shitstorm over whether and aging Joe Biden should remain the party's nominee.

0:18.2

Today, a bit of a word about Hakeem Drefrees and Chuck Schumer. Becoming a member

0:22.5

of congressional leadership is about more than fundraising for lawmakers and setting a congressional

0:27.5

legislative schedule. It is also about making tough calls. And this week, Jeffries and Chuck Schumer

0:33.9

are about to learn that in the most difficult way imaginable.

0:38.7

Lawmakers are returning from congressional recess and a growing subset of Democrats are not only

0:43.5

poised to call on Joe Biden to step aside from the nomination. They're also looking at their

Hill Democrats that the party can't keep dithering on this issue, which allows news cycle after

1:17.4

news cycle to be dominated by this bickering about whether Biden is even mentally capable of

1:22.9

handling another four years. It's just not good publicity. Multiple Democrats are looking at Friday as a sort of

1:28.1

soft deadline for Biden to prove that he's up to the job and for lawmakers to somehow get him to

1:32.9

withdraw if they determine that he's not. I talked to Mike Quigley last night who told me this is a

1:37.9

critical week people have to act. And frankly, it's time for some tough love. Quickly, obviously,

1:43.4

is one of the few Democrats who have

1:44.8

gone on record saying Biden needs to go. Another House Democrat, pretty senior, I will say, put it to me

1:50.5

this way. The larger issue here is, what does Hakeem do? If I were Hakeem, Nancy Pelosi, or Schumer,

1:56.7

I'd go to Jill Biden and say, this man is going to be in the top 10 best American presidents unless
