Last night was budget night.

The night of nights in Australian politics, let me tell you, and I've been reading all day,

everything you want to know about the budget, and I'll explain to you if you're in America,

what the hell I'm talking about here.

including my hot take? This is going to be everything you ever wanted to know about the budget,

but we're afraid to ask. If you are outside of Australia and you're thinking, what is a budget

in this context? It's kind of like the State of the Union in Australia, and I guess in other

parliamentary democracies, do they do it the same way?

It might be an Australian thing, where the government essentially lays out its priorities for

the coming year and what it intends to do. And unlike a state of the Union, where the president

can say what he wants to do, but ultimately is hamstrung by Congress, at least in theory,

you know, in the theory of that pesky

constitution that America has, where Congress is actually a co-equal branch instead of a lap dog

of the executive branch. Here, the government can do what it wants to do, because by definition,

it has a majority, or at least a plurality in the House of

Representatives, in this case, a full majority, a thumping majority, and it's likely to get whatever

it wants through the Senate, although the current governing party does not control the Senate,

it's a large enough, you know, has enough seats in the Senate that will be able to get this
