morning we awoke to the news that the people have beaten the multi-billionaire owners of England's top six football clubs as each one of them withdrew from the European Super League, like so many bottles disappearing off the top of a wall last night and started apologising to the fans for even thinking they could do such a thing. Mark my words, though, this is just phase one in a long battle that the owners will eventually win.

Last night there were tales of daring do doing the rounds, such as the one that had Manchester United Captain Harry McGuire confronting Chief Executive Ed Woodward over the plans, which resulted apparently in Woodward offering his resignation.
