0:29.0 | And I'll respond by saying it's a huge shame that people don't know more about John McDool Stewart |
0:34.0 | because he is probably the greatest explorer of the Australian Interior in history. |
0:39.0 | Stewart led six expeditions into the Australian Interior in the late 1850s and early 1860s, |
0:45.0 | and was a direct competitor of the famed Birken Will's expedition, |
0:48.0 | in a race to become the first people to ever cross the continent. |
0:51.0 | So what made Stewart such a great explorer? |
0:54.0 | Well, he not only got across the continent, he came back. |
0:57.0 | In all of this, he proved to be a clever and resilient man, |
1:01.0 | who survived despite terrible conditions, such as scurvy, extreme heat, and a hundred other challenges. |
1:07.0 | And in the process, he never lost a man under his command. |
1:10.0 | Some more fun stuff about John McDool Stewart, or simply McDool Stewart, as he was called, |
1:15.0 | was that the guy was a short, slight man with a history of health issues, |
1:19.0 | yet no one could equal the guy for stamina and determination. |
1:22.0 | Do we need more? Well, sure. |
1:24.0 | Stewart was also a social misfit, more at home in the wild than amongst other human beings. |
1:29.0 | He had this big, dark, bushy beard, unkempt hair, and wore rough frontier clothing. |
1:34.0 | He looked like a crazed prospector or preacher, such as John Brown. |
