Hey, my name is John Legend and welcome to Radio Headspace and to Wednesday. We're halfway through the week.

Today we're going to talk about self-care. I'll tell you about how I organize my very busy life and the routines I have in place to make sure I show up for my work, family and relationship.

The first time I wrote a song, I didn't know that I was going to write a song. It was just something that popped in my head.

I was probably humming it around school on the bus, thinking about what I wanted to say and part of it was about trying to hit on a girl.

I think it was called I Want to Make You Mine or something very juvenile and simple like that.

I was probably like 11 or 12 and I like worked it out on the piano.

I don't know that I ever actually sang it to her but I tried to write it in a way that if I did sing it to her, it would definitely work.

My songwriting process developed pretty quickly once I started really getting into songwriting and it's really consistent.

I write almost the exact same way every time. So the groove, the vibe of the song usually is established first.

Then that will lead me to sing hook ideas. Basically the hook is the main thing you remember about the song, the melody, the lyric that is the theme of the song and the most memorable aspect of the song.

I usually write that next and then I will hum a bunch of things that don't make any sense but I'll just keep working on it until I figure out what the lyric is.

I know it's right when it just feels like every line makes sense. It tells the story right. It has some interesting ways of phrasing things that are fresh and different.

It still has that combination of familiarity and freshness and something that people can grab onto.

Everybody's process is different. Some people are waiting for a specific situation in their lives to happen to push them to write something.
