This is Design Matters with Debbie Milman from Design Observer.com.

On this program, Debbie Millman talks with Joe Mary Anak about working with design legends like

Milton Blazer, Paula Cher, and Michael Beirut,

about the decisions that shaped his career and about the process of getting hired at Apple.

They kind of stalk you and find you and call you. I there were 10 calls four visits seven meals it was

very you chew very intimidating a couple background checks here's Debbie

Melman with the iMac, the iPod, the iPhone, and iPad, and other incredibly successful products,

Apple has sold many millions of consumers on the power of good design. In fact, it's hard to make a better

case for the importance of design than Apple's products do, with everything from the elegant

packaging, the attentive retailing, and the intuitive software.

So to be a designer and work for Apple

must be a very heady experience indeed. Joe Mariana has led integrated projects with the Apple

Global Design Group. We're going to talk a little bit about that as well as his

years working with the likes of Milton Laser, Paula Cher, and Michael Beirut.

This year Joe co-founded the Design Studio Small Stuff in New York City, and he's also

a colleague of mine here at the School of Visual Arts.

So, Joe, I understand that in your spare time, you play the upright base in a civic orchestra?

I do. I just sort of came out with that recently.
