0:00.0 | Greetings dear listeners this is Jonah Goldberg host of the Remnant Podcast |
0:29.7 | brought to you by the Dispatch and Dispatch Media. Go to the Dispatch.com to find out who really killed J.R. |
0:39.7 | Today's episode is sponsored by our friends at Donors Trust and by bound by oath. More about those guys in a little bit. |
0:52.0 | So recently we had Kevin Williamson on who's an old friend and former colleague of mine and his first question when he came on was, |
1:03.8 | so who canceled on you? And that person was none other than my friend and colleague from AEI, James Pethacukis, who we've finally gotten back. |
1:14.6 | And he is, what is your title Jim? |
1:19.3 | Oh, I think I'm a I'm a duet Wallace fellow. I think that's the official title. I just, of economic stuff. |
1:29.8 | Yeah, I mostly focus on writing about economics occasionally a few other things, but about 99% that. |
1:38.0 | And we both came as at least as grownups because I was there in a larval stage in the 90s, but came to AEI around the same time about a decade ago. |
1:48.5 | And you know, who was the better choice to come back to AEI? Historians will debate that for years to come. |
1:58.0 | But so you write about economics a lot and talk about economics a lot. And so this just must be a fantastic time for you. |
2:05.8 | So interesting, so much fun. What's your take on the where we are? |
2:12.2 | Of course, the worst out of love, plunging markets, expanding unemployment roles. We get to rethink maybe our, you know, some of our previous assumptions. |
2:21.6 | I'm actually fairly terrified. And I'm more of a, I'm kind of an economic expansion bull market kind of person. That's what I really feel like. |
2:34.9 | That's where I feel like I'm at my best. So I would certainly much much prefer that that be the case. Unfortunately now that, you know, twice now in the past decade, we've had these, you know, absolutely sort of catastrophic economic declines for very different reasons. |
2:52.4 | Especially that coming after such a long period, you know, this long boom from the early 80s 2007 when, you know, boy, you kind of hope that we had, we had sort of figured it all out. |
3:05.5 | And this was going to last forever. Indeed, there are countries where they've had extraordinarily long booms. |
3:11.8 | Australia, I think, had almost a 30 year expansion ending, I think yesterday because of the virus. So yeah, so that's, you know, that was, that's, most of my career has been spent at a time of, you know, robust growth, expanding jobs that I much prefer to be writing about that. |
3:28.0 | But that's here here. |
3:29.6 | Yeah, just so you know, I was attempting some gallows humor when I said this must be a great time for you because I know because you're one two punch. |
3:37.0 | I know you're not a monster channel. |
3:39.0 | I'm wasting my heart as impulses of mankind. Yeah, that's for sure. |
