Summary

In the best example of a "Markan sandwich" we see two remarkable healings which are meant to teach us some remarkable and needful lessons. Jesus meets our deepest fear with a call to faith that calms our hearts and changes the way we see death forever. I hope and pray that the beautiful truths of this passage of Scripture will get stuck in your head and heart. I'm Pastor Mike Winger and this is Bible Thinker the program dedicated to thinking

0:05.8

biblically about everything. This is the Mark Series part 17, 17 now in the Mark Series and today we talk about Jesus

0:16.3

raising the dead and healing a woman with a chronic illness and I think that this passage

0:21.9

is probably the best example in the Gospel of Mark of something really unique to the Gospel of Mark and that's something I talked about previously called a Mark and Sandwich.

0:30.0

A Mark and Sandwich. It's like a literary technique that Mark uses that has been observed by those who read his book, you know.

0:37.0

The Mark and sandwich is like this. You know, think of Mark starting a story, and that's like a piece of bread in the sandwich and then

0:46.0

there's the end of the story that would be the other piece of bread in the

0:48.5

sandwich but what Mark does is it's like he opens the bread and he sticks a

0:52.1

different story in the middle.

0:54.1

So he has two stories, but they're not one after the other, rather one interrupts the other.

0:58.8

And that's what we have in this Markin sandwich.

1:01.3

So we'll talk about that today. The story of Jesus raising this

1:05.2

girl from the dead is interrupted by him healing this woman of her 12 year

1:09.5

chronic illness. And I'm going to say this, these stories could easily have been just told

1:14.4

separately, right? Like it just told like different events because they were

1:17.3

different things. And while they did happen in this order, they're also

1:21.9

recorded in this order for a reason.

1:24.1

So I think that that's where we can gain insights.

1:26.4

We can ask, hey, if I see a Markin sandwich, these two stories one put inside the other,

1:31.8

there must be some relation between them.

1:33.7

There must be some lesson that I'm to learn,

1:36.4

some giving, being given an interpretation in a sense through the way it's done.
