Summary

The idea that Jesus died in our place, suffering the penalty for our sins, is under serious attack. We need to understand where we can find Penal Substitutionary Atonement ideas in the Bible, starting with the Old Testament. This is part of a series explaining and defending Penal Substitutionary Atonement. I'll cover biblical data, historical data, moral objections and more so that you will understand the doctrine, how to defend it and what's really wrong with this modern move against the biblical teaching on Jesus' sacrificial death. Today we are looking at the idea of sacrifice and atonement in the OT, the Day of Atonement, the Passover sacrifice, and (if we have time) Isaiah 53 and penal substitution. And while that may not seem like a huge issue,

it is actually a major debate going on in Christianity. I say Christianity

0:29.0

because a lot of the people who are on the wrong side of this debate aren't

0:32.4

really Christian and I don't say that to be harsh.

0:35.0

It's just a Christianity is a thing and you reject the core of that thing you're not actually Christian.

0:40.0

Others, they're Christian, but I think they're just confused.

William Lane Craig said that this one doctrine, penal substitution, is under attack more than any other view held during the Reformation time.

0:51.0

Meaning that amongst like Protestants or evangelicals, this is the biggest doctrine that's under fire right now.

0:57.4

And I'm defending it in this series.

Today we're looking specifically at the Old Testament and what does the Old Testament say about

why Jesus died?

1:06.0

Did he die for my sins?

1:08.5

That's the concept, was it for my sins?

1:11.0

And I'll get more detail as we go here. But I think this is the most important question that we can ask.

In this whole series, this video and the sister videos I make that are about the biblical case for penal substitution.
