What's going on, guys? Question number 22 of the catechism, and it is, why must the Redeemer be truly human?

That in human nature, he might, on our behalf, perfectly obey the whole law and suffer the punishment for our sin, and also that he might sympathize with our weaknesses.

So it's twofold here. Why must he be truly human? And the next

episode we'll talk about why he must be truly God. Why he must be truly human is this. So he could

obey the law on our behalf because we can't obey the law. And because we don't obey the law, suffer the punishment for our sins. So that's the first part. Because we don't obey the law, suffer the punishment for our sins.

So that's the first part.

Because we can't obey the law, we need someone to do it for us,

and we need someone to suffer the punishment for us,

the one that we deserve.

The second half of this is that he might also sympathize with our weaknesses.

It wouldn't be enough if he just obeyed the law,

took our punishment, but didn't even know what we felt

or what it's like to be tempted.
