If you are of a certain age, you remember the opening credits of MTV's The

Real World, which promised a true story of what happens when seven strangers stop being polite and start getting real.

I've thought a lot about that lately in the context of autonomous vehicles.

I was in San Francisco last month,

where there's a real driverless commercial deployment

and another likely coming.

There's real service, real customers, real problems and real complaints. real

problems and real complaints. You perhaps have seen the reports of

cruise vehicles clustering at intersections and interfering with

first responders and we're starting to see a backlash both in terms of

uncertainty with Cruz and Weymo waiting to hear from the California Public

Utilities Commission on whether or not they can expand or start service.

And also in California, Big Labor is pushing a bill

that would stop autonomous trucking in its tracks.

Why is all this happening? Because all the self-driving technology that we've talked about for a decade is finally getting real.
