There's a gap between the aspirations automakers have to sell millions of electric vehicles in the decade ahead

and the reality that there's not enough raw materials

to build batteries for all those cars.

We heard just a few weeks ago on the podcast from Piedmont Lithium CEO Keith Phillips,

who estimates there's going to be a lot of assembly lines running at minimum capacity

until the day when supply and demand can be balanced.

So how might that gap be solved?

One answer is recycling.

At mid-November, Panasonics said it would source remanufactured cathode material from Redwood materials.

The recycling and circular supply chain company founded by former Tesla chief technology officer

J.B. Straubel.

J.B. might be the first person to really foresee this big picture that's growing more

apparent every day, that recycling was possible and needed to help E.S. proliferate, that being dependent on an overseas supply chain left the auto industry

really vulnerable, that recycling plays a role in reducing the environmental impact of battery

production.
