0:32.0	It's great to have you with us for this epic story of escape and courage.
0:36.0	The Nazis had a tight grip on Norway by 1943 and the Allies were trying every way they could,
0:42.0	with the help of Norwegian men who had either escaped the Nazis,
0:45.0	or were away from their home country when the Germans rolled in and occupied it.
0:49.0	Now the greatest desire was to free their countrymen, and if it meant dying in the process, so be it.
0:55.0	Beyond Balls Root was the only survivor of one such mission.
0:58.0	His comrades and arms were all dead.
1:00.0	He had no personal effects other than the clothes he wore and his sidearm and his pocketknife.
1:05.0	All that, including his identification, had blown up with the fishing boat that had brought him to the coast.
1:11.0	His boot had been shot off, along with this big toe.
1:14.0	The boot had to be replaced by generous locals who risked their lives to provide him shelter.
1:18.0	And this was the pattern that would continue as he moved constantly,
1:22.0	not wanting to place these kind partisans and their families in the path of danger.
1:26.0	And it was these people and their families that went through Jan's mind as the roboat,
1:31.0	manned by the two sirensons, Einar and Bernard, Einar's father,
1:35.0	churning through the heavy snow and high wind on its way to the mainland.
1:39.0	Jan had gone two nights now without sleep and he was running now on adrenaline.
1:43.0	They had provided him with skis and ski boots as soon he could move in freedom
1:47.0	and surroundings that he understood.
1:50.0	It was mid-morning when the small boat pulled up on the southern shore of the mainland.
