Summary

In today’s episode, we cover breathing with James Nestor. James has written for Scientific American, BBC, The New York Times, The Atlantic, National Public Radio and more, and is the author of the best-selling book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art. Breathing incorrectly can have detrimental effects on your sleep, metabolism, inflammation, and even your lifespan, but what is the correct way to breathe, why is evolution working against us so we breathe worse over time, and what exercise can you use to train your body to subconsciously breathe correctly? What to Listen For Introduction – 0:00 How did James Nestor become so focused on breathing? How is evolution working against our breathing? What do people often get wrong about survival of the fittest and evolution? The Lost Art of Breathing – 11:10 Why is breathing not talked about by the medical community when it’s so crucial to our health and wellbeing? How does breathing impact your sleep and what can you do to improve your sleep with your breathing? How does breathing impact your metabolism and how can you use your breathing to help you burn more calories? How are lung capacity and lifespan connected and how can you increase your lifespan? Breathe CORRECTLY to eliminate inflammation – 34:00 How is your breathing on a daily basis making your chronic inflammation worse and how should you be breathing instead? Why do you need to stop breathing with your mouth? Why do we feel better as humans when we breathe through our noses and not our mouths? How long should you inhale, hold your breath, and exhale to train your body to breathe correctly? How can correct breathing make you a better public speaker? Many people go through their entire lives without thinking about the way they breathe. It’s one of those things that our bodies do automatically so it’s easy to shrug off, but breathing is arguably one of the most important activities we do on a daily basis, so time should be spent trying to understand the best way to breathe. All right, Johnny, let's kick off today's episode with James Nestor. James is an author and journalist and his book, Breathe.

1:00.5

The new science of a lost art was an instant success and listed as one of the best books of 2020 by the lost gene post parade, MPR Amazon and more.

1:09.5

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and it really changed the way I look at my own breathing.

1:14.5

In this book, James explores the million year long history of how the human species has lost the ability to breathe properly.

1:21.5

That's right, we are not breathing properly and it's causing a long list of maladies, including snoring, sleep apnea, asthma, autoimmune diseases and allergies.

1:31.5

Can't wait to dig into this one. Welcome to the show James.

1:35.5

James's book is one of those topics that seems to be in front of everybody and you decided to pick it up and then in doing so it took off.

1:44.5

I mean, before I got into reading it and doing my research for this episode, I had realized and I already had several discussions of the evolution of our face with several people and it was due to this book coming out and it was the first I was hearing a lot of this stuff.

2:03.5

So I'm very excited having this conversation today.

2:06.5

And did you know this book was going to be one of those topics that sort of exploded?

2:11.5

No, not at all. And it's funny because when the book came out about six weeks into lockdown of the pandemic, you know, some guy said, oh, you know, very convenient of you to quickly write this book and release it right in the midst of a respiratory pandemic.

2:27.5

I've been writing this book for it took about five, six years to write it.

2:32.5

I had no idea that anyone was going to be interested in breathing as I had become. I thought that there was an interesting story here, but as a writer, you release your book out into the world and have no idea what's going to happen to it.

2:46.5

Well, we'd love to hear a little bit about your journey into breathing for some context for us.

2:51.5

You know, we've had dozens of therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists on the show. And when we talk about anxiety, overcoming fear, they'll often recommend breathing exercises as one of those ways to modulate our own behaviors.

3:05.5

But outside of that, breathing is sort of seen as woo, woo in a lot of spaces.
