Summary

What other people think about you is their own business. Actress, musician, and talk show host Jada Pinkett Smith looks internally for her self-worth.

In this chat with Fearne, Jada explains why it’s so important to take responsibility for how you feel about yourself. They also talk about why we’re sometimes just as afraid to embrace our own light as we are to acknowledge the shadow parts of ourselves. Plus, Jada details the difference between trauma and adversity, and makes it clear the latter is both necessary and transformative.

Jada’s book, Worthy, is out now.

CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains frank chat about suicidal thoughts, so do take care while listening.

Hello, I'm Fern Cotton and this this is Happy Place, the show that gives space to both the light and the shadow in our characters.

Today I'm chatting to Jayda Pinkett Smith. I had a place that I could put all of the like just the unaccepted parts of myself and

0:27.2

just have a good old playful shadow dance and I think that as women we all need that whether it's

0:34.8

painting whether it's going out in the woods and dancing naked under the full

0:39.2

moon whatever that thing is for you personally. We have to learn how to give ourselves permission.

0:46.4

We have to learn how to love ourselves in our shadows and in our light as well.

Jader is an actress, a musician and a talk show host

It's one of the happy place conversations that certainly stuck with me for many reasons, but I really liked what Jader was saying back on that initial podcast about emotional independence, figuring out problems and knowing that you'll be okay without

1:15.0

instantly reaching out to someone. I think both are good. I think it's great to be

1:19.5

able to reach out and talk to people, but I really like the idea of cultivating emotional independence.

1:25.4

Well a lot has happened since then. You're probably aware that Jader and husband Will Smith

1:31.2

have publicly announced that they've been separated since 2016.

1:35.2

You'll also no doubt be aware of what happened with Chris Rock at the Oscars.

1:39.2

But it's Jader's phenomenal attitude towards these and so many other apparent adversities that I'm most interested in.

1:46.0

Her ability to look inward to validation and love and confidence is a real thread throughout her life.

1:52.0

And I really enjoyed getting to understand more about

1:55.1

where that resilience comes from by reading her book worthy. And I loved getting to have this conversation

2:01.0

with her because she really drew me into her very thoughtful world

2:04.8

and I think you're going to get just as wrapped up in it as I was.
