In the 1960s, Martin Nipsett, a really influential local scientist, made the striking observation

about the political system in Europe and North America.

The party system he showed had become frozen.

After a decade of rapid change, it started to look like the same kinds of parties got elected again and again.

So sometimes the center left party would win office, sometimes they would fall out of favor and the

center right party would overtake them, but between them they took up a lot of space in the political system,

the basic members of the political system went changing.

And that observation held true for the next 40 or so years the party structure really was frozen.

Well I've been arguing over the last couple of years that it has started to fall,

that you've started to see the rise of populist parties on the far right and

also on the far left. But what's happened over the last year is truly striking. The party system isn't just foring, it's, I don't know, boiling.

Look at Austria, where in the presidential election you had candidates of two minor parties facing off each other in the second round.
