Summary

Today, Israel carried out a surprise strike on senior Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar.

Hamas claims the leaders - who were in Doha as part of the delegation negotiating a possible ceasefire deal - survived but said that six others were killed in the strike.

The Trump administration was notified about the strikes before they happened by the US military, and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says it was a “wholly independent Israeli operation”.

What does this mean for the ongoing war in Gaza? Adam speaks to the BBC’s chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet, and chief presenter, Caitríona Perry.

0:22.8

strictly speaking, not really a census. And if you go into the episode description, you will find a link

to it. And there's a bunch of questions, not too many, where we ask you about your experience

0:32.3

of newscast, and we'd love to hear your answers. And don't worry, there's no personal data in

0:37.1

there. We don't take your name or your details or anything like that. It's all just about your listening

Hello, this afternoon was just one of those moments where you thought, what is going on in the world?

0:53.8

And we got the

0:54.3

breaking news early in the afternoon on Tuesday that Israel had launched a military strike on Doha,

1:00.4

the capital of Qatar, and that they had targeted senior leadership of Hamas. Qatar said that this

1:07.0

was a blatant breach of international law. It was condemned by the UK, but the White House

1:12.2

let it be known that they'd had notice in advance of the attack. So why has this happened? What

1:17.7

does it mean? And also, what does it mean for the peace process in Gaza? We'll discuss all of that

on this episode of Newscast. Newscast from the BBC. Fat boy sliver me in the classroom doing our violin lessons. I was the tattle tail in the class. Can I have an apology, please? I trust almost nobody. That daddy has to sometimes do strong language. Next time in Moscow. I feel delulu with no solulu. Take me down to Downey Street. Let's go have a tour. Blimey. Hello, it's Adam in the newscast studio, though it's a bit of a breaking newscast studio today because this big international story is still unfolding. But I've got some people to help us understand it. Lees Doucette is here in the studio with me. Hello, Lees. It's another breathtaking moment. We're still digesting this.

2:35.3

The breaking news, it is still breaking. Well, yeah, because you've got your phone in front of it. Normally, I think of you is like you know everything and you come in and just tell us, but actually you're learning as we go along. It changes as we speak. We have to say now at 20 minutes to seven. And also in Washington, it's Katrina Perry. Hi, Katrina. Hi Adam, how are you? I will say that I'm keeping one eye and ear on you and Lee's and the other I'm keeping on the White House press briefing because as we're talking right now, it's the first kind of, well, we're expecting the first official word from all of this from the White House. Well, Katrina, I will let you focus on that,

2:39.4

and then we'll come back to you when you've had a chance to process that.
