Summary

Today, the new Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said that the UK could suspend visas for countries with who don’t “play ball” with the government’s migrant return plans.

This comes after the Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s surprise cabinet reshuffle at the end of last week, triggered by the resignation of his Deputy Angela Rayner, who paid an incorrect amount of stamp duty on a property. The Labour NEC has announced the timeline for a deputy leader election campaign.

Adam and Chris unpack the Home Secretary’s plans, and ask — who could be the next deputy PM?

Adam also speaks to the new Scotland Secretary Douglas Alexander about his new brief. They discuss the upcoming deputy leadership election and how the reshuffle may impact the direction of the party.

Hello, it's great to be back and thank you very much to James Cook for keeping my seat warm,

0:09.2

although he did it virtually because he was in a studio in Glasgow where he lives,

0:12.6

rather than in the classic newscast studio.

0:15.0

But thank you anyway.

0:16.3

And also it means I'm reunited because he's been on holiday and then I went on holiday with Chris Mason.

0:21.4

Hello. Hello, hello. Welcome, welcome back. I even saw the new newscast and indeed lots of other BBC podcast studio in Glasgow, which is quite the thing.

0:30.4

Did I miss much?

0:31.5

An entirely relaxed and event-free week for my return to Westminster. Yeah, it was a little of a lively one,

0:38.4

it's fair to say. What's interesting, though, is because you know I was standing in from Matt Charlie on Five Live for a couple of weeks. I was there for the start of the Angela Rainer's story, which was that, oh, isn't it funny? She's drinking Rosie in a dry robe in the beach, on the beach in hove, which is how that story began.

0:54.2

Yes. No, no, quite.

0:55.5

And then it had this momentum, really. in a dry robe in the beach, on the beach in Hove, which is how that story began.

0:54.5

Yes.

0:55.4

No, no, quite.

0:58.8

And then it had this momentum, really, didn't it?

1:01.0

That built and built and built.

1:06.1

And to the point where in the hours and days before she resigned, it looked increasingly inevitable, and then it happened, and then everything that's followed since then.

1:09.7

We will talk about some of the consequences of that story in the rest of this episode. But we've got a little announcement of our own, first of all. Chris, have you heard about the newscast census? No. Well, you know what a census is because we're both geographers. Yes. When every 10 years they survey the whole country to find out things about us. We're going to do a newscast version.

1:28.9

Oh, right. And the first thing to say is if you want to do the newscast census, it's not a real census because it doesn't involve any personal data or your personal circumstances. So it's totally anonymous. We're not gathering anything private from you. But it's just a sort of little survey, completely unscientific and unrepresentative,

1:47.3

to find out how people actually experience newscast so we can tailor this podcast to more people's

1:52.9

preferences.

1:53.7

This is terrific.
