This is CBSI in the world. I'm John Bachelorette with the St.

O'Connor, former ambassador from Pakistan to the United States now at the Hudson Institute

and Bill Rojo, the foundation for the defensive democracies. Mr. Ambassador, as you are very

carefully illustrated, O'Connor looks to be out of the next election and yet remains

all powerful whether he's on the ticket or not. Is this a decision that would have been

blessed by strong neighbors such as Saudi Arabia or China or the United States to what should

have to say intervene in the democratic process?

I think most of Pakistan's friends are kind of relieved that Imran Khan is not going to

be in contention for office at least for the foreseeable future. He was a disaster in

international relations terms. He was a demagogual, the populist and like all demagogues and

populists, he would beat up on anybody that would earn him applause. So the United States

was a favorite target. You remember his famous line about the Taliban having broken the

shackles of slavery at a time when everybody was worried about the Taliban taking over

in Afghanistan. He did not please the Chinese in the way he handled the China Pakistan economic

corridor. He annoyed the Saudis. Among other things with the fact of selling off the

gift that the crown prince very lovingly gave him for his personal use, a very nice watch

that was first sliced from. He decided to sell it off. So not a very diplomatic character.

Is everybody relieved that he might not become prime minister again? Yes. And they are watching

the situation as closely as possible. At the same time, everybody knows that intervening in Pakistan's

politics is a fool's errand. Things go the direction they take. They would rather let the

Pakistani military and the ISI handle it than have anything to do with themselves.
