A Chinese fighter jet flew within 50 yards of a Japanese patrol plane during military drills in the Pacific,

prompting a rebuke from Japanese

officials who warned that such close passes could lead to accidental collisions.

China, for its part, placed the blame on Japan for its close-in reconnaissance flights

aimed at surveilling Chinese military activities.

The close call comes amid rising tensions in the Pacific as both China and the United

States and its allies have carried out a series of military drills in recent months.

Israel launched a wide-ranging assault on Iran, killing more than 20 of Iran's senior military officials

and damaging several nuclear facilities. President Trump endorsed Israel's attack in a post-on-truth

social, but added that it could represent an opportunity for Iran to accept a new nuclear deal,

quote, before there is nothing left, end quote.

Girard Arro, a former French ambassador to the U.S. who has taken part in Iran nuclear talks

in the past, warned on Twitter that the attacks could backfire.
