Today I want to cover a question I received about watermelon on keto. Is watermelon okay on keto?

Melons aren’t really the most keto-friendly fruit. The watermelon glycemic index is a little too high. You want to look at the carbs, fiber, and sugar that are in the fruit you eat while on the ketogenic diet. Watermelon and other melons don’t have much fiber, and there is a little too much sugar.

Consuming small amounts of watermelon on keto isn’t a problem as long as you keep your total carbs on the lower side. You also have to realize that there is a good amount of sugar in watermelon. If you’re trying to lose weight, this could be one barrier of getting into fat burning.

A better choice over melon would be berries, like blackberries.

0:38.7

is that okay?

0:39.7

I haven't, I don't think I've done a video on this,

0:41.5

so let's just kind of cover this. So we have watermelon,

0:44.8

cantaloupe, and honeydew melon. Here's the problem. It's a little too high on the glycemic index.

0:52.3

We got 11 grams of carb for watermelon per cup. We have 13 grams of

0:58.0

carb for the cantaloupe and then we got 15 grams of carb on the honeydew.

1:03.7

And realize that the fiber is not that high.

1:06.5

We have like 0.6 grams, not even one gram of fiber

1:10.6

for watermelon per cup. Cantalup has a little more fiber, 1.4 grams,

1:15.0

and the honeydew is 1.4 grams of fiber,

1:18.0

and you would deduct that to get the net carbs,

1:20.0

so this is really the number that you're looking at 10.4 grams, 11.6 and 13.6 grams for the net carbs.
