Berman of the American Foreign Policy Council to help us understand a complicated map in

the Middle East now that the US has left the area. Iran is asking for Iraq's help in

dealing with Kurdistan. Subset of this is that there are Kurds in Iran, there are Kurds

in Iraq, there are Kurds in Turkey, of course. And the Kurdish part of Iran has been one

of the strongest areas of protest these many weeks against the central regime. Elon,

a very good evening to you. Thank you for this. What does Iran want from its, you'd have

to say, client state of Iraq. What do they want them to do?

Hi, John. I think this is a really interesting question because it taps into precisely what

you're talking about. The Kurdish issue is this cross-cutting one that affects Iranian

politics, Iraqi politics, Turkish politics. And so what you're seeing is that these are

countries that don't agree on very much, generally speaking. They may cooperate tactically,

but their politics are very widely at variance, but they do agree on that ethnic issue because

the leaders in all these countries understand, and it's not just those three, it's Syria

as well, that they understand that if there is greater autonomy on the part of their Kurdish
