Maybe you remember the outlines. It was the Obama era,

a few months before the 2012 election. An American diplomatic compound in Libya came under attack

and the U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens was killed, along with several others. As I detail in

fiasco, the historical forces that led up to the attack were fascinating and complex,

touching on the war on terror, the reign of Muammar Gaddafi, and the contested principles of American diplomacy.

But in the months and years that followed the attack,

as the truth about what happened in Benghazi was debated, memed, and weaponized,

the tragedy became fodder for cable news pundits,

congressional investigations, and political operatives who saw in it a renewable resource for media

attention and outrage. As I found out while making this show, there is a plausible case to be made

that Benghazi gave us our current era. And in retrospect,

served as the final chapter of the previous one.
