Holly's work is as much about the painting as it is about her frames.

Her frames are an extension, an elaboration on her painting. She

started thinking that frames could be more than just an enclosure or

protection for a painting during her undergrad years at San Jose State University.

Holly's first clues came from the way the borders of eliminated

manuscripts added dimension to early text and she has been elaborating on that

theme ever since. She began creating her own

frames, intricate housings for her paintings, which often have doors that open to

reveal the paintings within. She designs her frames along with the paintings sometimes

coming up with the frame first and allowing that to dictate her painting. She selects the

wood presses and carves it in her studio and workshop in California.
