Scott Connery is a painter living in Portland, Oregon.

After graduating from Rhode Island School of Design

with a degree in illustration, Scott worked as a designer and illustrator.

Painting had always been a part of his life, but after the birth of his daughter Jane, he left his design and illustration clients behind and made the decision to dedicate

his career to fine art. As you undoubtedly note, the consequences of this decision often

brings instability. It can be a tough commitment for any artist and as Scott will tell you

making this commitment requires a very special kind of stubbornness and dedication.

But Scott's story has a lot more to it. It has a little girl named Jane and Jane is a little

bundle of laughter and hugs. She is of course at the center of her parents being. We talk a lot

about Jane in this episode because her story shapes everything about Scott.

Jane was born with a rare heart disease. She had the first of many surgeries when she was only eight days old.

None of these surgeries came with guarantees or certainty.

So this episode is as much about Scott and his family as it is about his art.

And I'll be honest, there were some tough moments in this conversation. I had questions I didn't really know how to ask or if I should even be asking

them. But as Scott points out, there are other families experiencing similar or worse situations,

which is exactly why his story needs to be heard.
