Summary

Our venue for the Yorkshire & North East regional final was the former Leeds Club — where the entrepreneurs of the region’s textile and other manufacturing industries would once have congregated.

We welcomed back guest judges Caroline Theobald, a leading promoter of entrepreneurship in Newcastle and the North East, and Gordon Black, a venture capitalist and former manufacturer from West Yorkshire — plus a trio of Charles Stanley’s Leeds representatives.

Our four finalists were all in cutting-edge technologies: Honcho in online vehicle insurance; Testcard in easy-access patient testing for healthcare; Element 2 in hydrogen power for truck and bus fleets; and Micropore in pharm manufacturing.

Again, a near-impossible choice but a terrific conversation — and a range of entries from a geographical spread that tells us entrepreneurship is alive and well in the UK provinces.

Welcome, everybody, to this the third in our series of podcasts for this year's Spectator,

0:16.5

Economic Innovator of the Year awards for 2021.

0:21.1

This is the fourth year in which we've done these awards.

0:24.8

They were originally called Disruptor Awards.

0:27.6

We changed the name to Innovator because we thought COVID was the great disruptor of the decade.

0:33.9

So Innovator would be a better word to use.

0:36.1

But the two are kind of interchangeable,

0:38.4

and we're looking for high growth, entrepreneur-led, businesses that are really changing

0:44.2

the marketplace, the industry, in which they operate, that have prospects for growth to become

0:51.6

national or international successes, to become unicorns in value term. And we're also

0:59.7

this year looking particularly for companies that have a particular angle on, interest in,

1:05.6

impressive track record in the field of ESG, that's environmental social governance treatment within their

1:13.5

business. So there we are. Today we're in Leeds. We've been meeting four entrants from the

1:20.3

Yorkshire and northeast region. We had a record number of entrance overall this year. We had

1:26.8

150 across the country. We had a good number

1:29.2

in all of the regions. So any of the companies that have been picked so far to come to our

1:35.5

semifinals and meet our judges are already, in a sense, winners. It's a very eclectic selection always.

1:42.2

So in the end, who we pick as the winners has a certain subjectivity

1:46.3

to it. So we congratulate everyone who comes to see us as a semi-finalist. That's still quite an

1:53.0

achievement in itself. I have with me my two veteran fellow judges for this region, who are

2:00.2

Caroline Theobald from the northeast, from up in Newcastle,

2:04.6

Gordon Black, a West Yorkshire businessman of some reputation and Stanley. I'll ask them to
