Summary

Our Midlands regional final took place on Zoom — a blast from the regional past, you might say — but was no less enjoyable and stimulating for that, all four regional entrants giving an excellent account of themselves.

They were Blutick, which is taking maths teaching online to a new level; Petalite, which offers powerful solutions for electric vehicle recharging; Regionally, which connects private investors to high-growth companies seeking capital across the UK regions; and Zipbout, an app to make travelling across transport networks easier and more efficient.

We were delighted to be joined as guest judges by Deloitte partner Claire Evans, Charles Stanley Wealth Managers’ HR Director Kate Griffiths-Lambert and an old friend of the Awards, Clive Bawden, COO of former winner Warwick Music.

Welcome, everyone. Welcome to this second podcast in a series of podcasts for the Spectators'

0:15.3

Economic Innovator of the Year Awards for 2021, sponsored by Charles Stanley Wealth Managers. This is the fourth year of our

0:24.3

awards scheme. It was originally called the disruptor of the year scheme, but we felt last year that

0:30.7

COVID was such a massive disruptor that it kind of won all the awards for being a disruptor. So we

0:35.9

changed the name to innovator. It kind of means

0:39.5

the same thing, maybe slightly different, but anyway, good innovators are also disruptors and vice versa.

0:46.3

So there we are. That's the presentation of it. We work on a regional basis. We look at five

0:52.1

regions around the country. Last week we were talking to

0:56.0

12 semi-finalists for London and the South East, and we had a fascinating session with them.

1:03.0

Today we've been talking to four semi-finalists from the Midlands. One of the challenges for our judges

1:10.0

is that we look at businesses across the whole range,

1:13.6

from fintech to edutec to electric vehicle technology to AI, healthcare, you name it.

1:23.6

And we're comparing apples and pairs all the time.

1:25.6

So it's terribly difficult to pick the winners, but it's a fascinating task for us.

1:31.3

As judges, it's very enjoyable and it's great for the spectator

1:35.3

to be associated with innovation and business growth and entrepreneurship,

1:41.3

which we greatly admire.

1:43.3

And we're particularly grateful to Charles Stanley,

1:45.7

distinguished, long-established firm of originally stockbrokers and our wealth managers

1:50.8

to have joined us as our partner this year and sponsor this. So I have with me three judges for the

1:58.3

region. They are Kate Griffiths-s Lambert, representing Charles Stanley, Claire Evans

2:04.9

from Deloitte, the accountancy firm, and Clive Warden from Warwick Music, which is one of our
