black women. And yet, Ida refused to do just about everything that was expected of her.

In the 1880s, when a train conductor that was

reserved for white women, she bit and fought him.

And when that didn't work she sued.

When she won her suit against the railroad,

they printed a headline,

Darkie Damsel-Winsuit.

When Ida married in the 1890s, she was expected to take her husband's name.

But instead, she hyphenated, using Wells Barrett at a time when few women did that and she continued to publish under her maiden name

As for the rest of her domestic duties

Ida be Wells even after she married, would sit there with her tea and everything, waiting for her

husband who was an attorney and a newspaper man and owner of a newspaper to come home and cook for her.
