and welcome to episode two of No-Man's Land. 25 years ago the novelist Megan Abbott was an English major at the University of

Michigan. She'd been reading Plath and decided she wanted to hear her, so she bought a set of her poems,

brought it back to her dorm room, and pressed play.

I was reading the poems in my head in sort of this rather solemn, dark, bleak way.

And listening to the cassette, it was so different.

Mother who made to order stories of Mixy Black Short,

the heroic bear.

Mother, whose witches always, always, got baked into gingerbread.

I wonder...

There was almost a kind of glee and pleasure in the darkness and the violence of the language.

A crocodile of small girls, knotting and stopping, ill- assorted in blue uniforms, opens to swallow me.

It was just so powerful.

It just changed the way. I was reading the poems and it changed the way I thought about women and aggression and anger.

When you kick me out, that's what I'll remember.
