Summary

In episode 451 of "Smashing Security," we meet the cybercriminal who hacked the US Supreme Court, Veterans Affairs, and more - and then helpfully posted screenshots (and even someone’s blood type) on an account called "I hacked the government."

Plus we discuss how researchers uncovered a creepy flaw that lets attackers hijack wireless headphones, listen in on calls, inject audio, and even turn your earbuds into a stalking device - all without you noticing.

All this, and much more, in this episode of the "Smashing Security" podcast with Graham Cluley, and special guest Ray [REDACTED]

That was always the criticism.

0:04.6

If you walk around downtown London or downtown New York City, you will see people with wireless headphones almost everywhere.

0:10.9

That's basically the standard.

0:12.3

But the number one criticism has always been that you could lose one.

0:16.0

Yes.

0:16.5

So I can always find them because all I have to do is pull the wire and they will come back to me.

I hacked the government and your headphones are next with Graham Cluley and special guest Ray Redacted. Hello, hello and welcome to Smash Insecurity episode 451. My name's Graham Cluley. Then I'm Ray Redacted. Hi, Ray. Thank you for coming back on the show. It's been a few years. I think it's been like four or maybe five. No, it's actually only even a couple. Has it? I think this is the third or fourth time. Well, it's great to have you back on the show again.

For those people who don't remember, I've never heard of Ray Redacted. What do you do? How are you

1:04.0

involved in this crazy world of cybersecurity? Well, it's interesting, Graham, because I had two

1:10.7

personas. I had my corporate daytime job at a corporation that's a Fortune 500 company. And then at night, or in the weekends or whatever, I was this very redacted persona that's on Twitter that does the blog post. And, you know, it's been quoted around cybersecurity circles for many, many years. So it's like Batman. There's Bruce Wayne and there's Batman. It was. It was.

1:28.9

Up until very recently, it was that way. The two personas kind of stayed completely apart, right?

1:33.8

I wasn't born with the name Ray Redacted. That wasn't my birth name.

1:37.1

Right. One of the reason why people may hear about you is because your son had a tremendous performance, didn't he, at the Olympics?

1:44.2

And I think he even got a world record.

1:47.4

Yes, that's correct.

1:48.4

So the very redacted anonymity kind of went out the window once a billion people saw my son competing at the Olympics.

1:55.7

And everyone knew that it was a very rejected son.

1:58.2

He does not climb under the name Sam redacted.

2:00.4

So most people could put two and two together. And so there's really not much of a point to being redacted when it's absolutely known and was kind of plastered all over the world. Well, it's an incredible achievement. You must be very proud. Oh, I am definitely a proud father. There's no question about that. Well, before we kick off, let's thank this week's wonderful sponsors, Threat, adaptive security, and Vanta. We'll be hearing more about them later on in the podcast.

This week on smashing security. We're not going to be talking about how hundreds of gigabytes

of data have been stolen by hackers from the European Space Agency.
