0:00.0	Welcome to another podcast on Lessons from the Backcountry. I'm Brian Call. On this episode, we're talking about a moose hunt I did a number of years ago floating down a river from the Arctic in Alaska, and it was about a hundred mile float. We're after a big moose, a couple of moose, caribou. If you see an animal at last light, do you go for it or do you wait until tomorrow? 0:33.8	if there's even a chance, a small chance, we can close the distance before dark, we're
0:39.5	going to go for it. The worst case scenario is that darkness falls and we hike back to camp and the
0:45.1	animal never knows we were there. Best case, we beat nightfall, we get into position and we put a
0:51.5	big bull on the ground. Also, sometimes you need a plan that feels impossible
0:55.9	and on this hunt our this will never work, plan actually did. So I'm going to share that with you
1:01.3	here toward the end, our little Hail Mary plan that actually turned out to be quite effective.
1:07.4	All right. So what do we do right? Well, we had gotten in our boats and rafted all day.
1:12.9	We were beat. We had a destination in mind where we wanted to hunt some moose. We loaded the boats
1:19.2	with the moose we had already killed. We loaded it with caribou. We got on the water and we've
1:23.8	drifted all day. It was a long day. We pulled up to our site where we were going to
1:28.8	glass from and where we're going to hunt from for the next day or two, hoping to find a moose in the
1:34.3	area. We arrive and it's late. In fact, I mean, it's so late you could easily justify just staying in
1:40.7	camp and not bothering to go up the mountain and climb the hill. We were beat,
1:44.9	we were tired, and actually spent some time glassing. And you could convince yourself,
1:48.8	even if you got up there and you did see a moose, there's not enough time to go after it.
1:52.2	But that's just not how we do it. We're like, hey, we're here to hunt every hour counts,
1:56.7	every minute counts. Every, like, lucky chance matters. We're all the way up in northern alaska
2:03.1	you only get to do these trips so often don't give into weakness don't give into tiredness
2:08.4	push yourself be disciplined get yourself to the top of the hill and do your damn job that's
2:13.2	kind of how we think about it so we got to a high glassing spot. It was before dark. It's kind of
