Hi, I'm Samantha and welcome to Radio Headspace and to Tuesday.

So I've been using Venmo a lot lately. If you're not familiar with it, it's an app that allows you to send and receive money.

You can see your friends' transactions if they make them public and add emojis, messages and gifts when you send money.

I've noticed that I find it easier and actually fun to send money to friends and family if you have Venmo.

It's funny how just by paying for something from a different account can radically change your relationship to money.

This insight made me think about how we can often feel stuck in our immediate relationship to things like money and our lives.

We may have inherited our financial habits from our parents or caregivers but we're not stuck with them.

The fact is that we can look at our relationship to things from someone else's point of view.

We can ask ourselves how would they see this?

One person in my life who has an exceptionally great relationship to money is my mom.

Since I can remember, she's always made a ritual out of paying bills.

She wraps a big red ribbon around her stack of bills, she lights a candle, and takes her time to write checks while appreciating all of the services and things that she gets to have.

She's grateful for the ability to pay for the electricity, the water, and her insurance, and she acknowledges the value that these resources add to her life.

Even when we didn't have a lot of money, my mother never let us feel the anxiety over our financial situation.
