1:01.0 | So I've been working with families and children as a mindfulness coach for over 10 years. |
1:06.0 | When most people think about developing mindfulness, they tend to assume it involves meditation and many practices. |
1:13.0 | But relational mindfulness is the present moment awareness that's cultivated when we're listening deeply and responding honestly with others. |
1:22.0 | One of my favorite relational mindfulness practices is called hot seat. It's a simple structure that can unlock a lot of insight. |
1:30.0 | In this activity, one person chooses to be in the hot seat and the rest of the group members ask that person questions out of curiosity. |
1:38.0 | And when the person answers or chooses not to answer, you must and can only reply with thank you. |
1:46.0 | Everyone in the group keeps their attention on the person in the hot seat and asks whatever comes to mind that they're genuinely curious about without a filter. |
1:55.0 | And often people fall in love with it and everyone ends up wanting a turn. |
2:01.0 | And it allows people to be seen and builds this incredible sense of intimacy in a relatively short period of time. |
2:09.0 | There's one hot seat experience that I'll never forget. It took place in one of the family mindfulness classes that I was leading at UCLA some years ago. |
2:17.0 | There were a mix of tweens and their parents and one 12 year old girl was brave enough to volunteer for the hot seat. |
2:28.0 | As other group members began to ask her questions, a pattern quickly arose. |
2:33.0 | This girl would immediately look at her mother every time a question was asked. |
