So a few weeks ago, I hosted a panel discussion at the Sydney Writers Festival on how we make up our minds.

It was all about the biases and heuristics that influence our decision-making,

all of these processes that play out in our minds that we're not necessarily aware of when we're

making up our minds. So we're going to play that event for you today, and on the panel were three

very sharp minds, starting with Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience

Murn Irish from the Brain and Mind Center at the University of Sydney.

Damien Cave, Australia Bureau Chief for the New York Times, and author of Into the Rip,

how the Australian way of risk made by family stronger, happier, and less American. And finally, Tim Dean, senior philosopher at the epic center

and author of the book How We Became Human and Why We Need to Change.

And this is something we're very much doing all of the time, isn't it?

We're making decisions, we're making judgments.

But I'm not sure that we're necessarily always aware that we're doing this.

So I want to start by asking, how often are we conscious of the fact that we're making up our

minds on or about something? How often is it deliberative versus automatic? And Maren, I'll start

with you in terms of what is the neuroscience yet. Tell us. I think this obviously is going to vary,
