Summary

Traveling with kids is not a vacation. It’s work. It’s labor. It’s also one of my absolute favorite things to do. In this episode I talk about how we actually make it happen as a family, from taking my “lumpy babies” to Sicily to hauling three kids through London while one of them pukes all over an Uber and then immediately asks for sushi. I’m joined by my family travel guru, writer and travel journalist Regan Stephens, founder of the travel guides Saltete and mom of three girls who spends a month every summer exploring the world with them. We dig into the real mechanics of traveling with kids: choosing one anchor activity a day instead of trying to see everything, letting each kid pick something so they feel invested, and embracing grocery stores, metros, and playgrounds as essential cultural experiences. It is labor. And it is incredibly rewarding and wonderful. And it is something that our family

I took him to Sicily with Nick.

We did a road trip when he was just three months old.

So he was still kind of a lumpy baby, which means you can carry them anywhere.

0:52.1

They can sleep on you anywhere.

0:54.9

And I was still really, really nervous.

We've taken all three of them on solo trips when they were still lumpy babies. And now we travel with the three of them together a lot. We just got back from London, which was actually a massive blast.

There was drama, to be sure. B totally puked all over an Uber that was in traffic,

1:14.2

and then we got out, and she's like, you know, I want some sushi. Can we get some sushi?

1:18.6

The thing is, when you're traveling with kids, even the worst moments, are definitely going to

1:22.2

become your most hilarious stories down the road. Today I'm bringing on a woman that I consider

my family travel guru and

mentor. Regan Stevens is a longtime travel and food journalist. She's the founder of the travel
