| 0:00.0 | What's going on everyone? Welcome back to another episode of the Epic |
| 0:04.4 | Gardening podcast. As always, my name is Kevin and today I am answering a |
| 0:08.4 | question from Travis. He says, I live in Sandy So area. I'm trying to improve the quality of my yard. I was thinking |
| 0:16.9 | about adding peat to my yard on top of my grass, but is there a good way to spread it? |
| 0:21.2 | I was looking at rollers, spreaders, or is there a good way to spread it? I was looking at rollers, spreaders, |
| 0:23.6 | or is there a better way to improve the quality of the yard? |
| 0:26.4 | Great question, and for people who are suffering |
| 0:29.4 | from maybe to sandy soil to clay soil, |
| 0:32.3 | there are a lot of different remedies but this is an |
| 0:34.2 | interesting one because we're talking about the soil in Travis's yard. So the |
| 0:39.2 | first thing you're going to want to do is actually aerate the soil. |
| 0:43.1 | And I have a recommendation guide on my website |
| 0:46.2 | about the best aerators. |
| 0:47.8 | So you can do it either by hand or you can get a machine aerator. |
| 0:51.4 | But you're going to want to do a nice core aeration because if you're going to top |
| 0:56.0 | dress with let's say Pete to fix Travis's sandy soil issue, you want some of that top dressing to be able to penetrate the surface of the lawn. |
| 1:06.8 | And that's very difficult to do if you don't aerate and do some core aeration because obviously it would just sit on the top of the lawn and it wouldn't |
| 1:14.4 | go into and penetrate the soil to change that composition from pure sand to a bit more water retention. |
| 1:22.0 | Now, if you do a classic top dressing on the lawn what you want to do |
| 1:25.8 | usually is use something like a combination of sand loam or topsoil and then peat or compost. |
| 1:33.0 | But in Travis's situation particularly, he would obviously want to |
| 1:38.0 | avoid that sand. So if I was him, I would probably add a bit of topsoil and peat, maybe at a 2 to 1 ratio of the peat to the topsoil if he has extremely sandy soil. |
