Summary

This week I am answering a question from listener Erin who wants to know how to get herself to do the things she wants to do. We all struggle with making good habits. We have values and priorities, but sometimes when it comes to following through, we need what Erin calls a “kick in the pants.” Snippet from the Show “God wants us to set reasonable goals out of self-love, not self-loathing.” SHOWNOTES There are some things that can help us find success in establishing the good habits we want and stopping the bad habits we don’t want. This week I am sharing four ideas: Identify your pitfalls. Think about what might make you fail before your failure happens. What obstacles might get in the way? What temptations might you fall prey to? Make a plan now for how you will handle your pitfalls or avoid them altogether. Make laziness work for you. We are all creatures of efficiency and so we can really increase our chances of success if we make good choices easy to do and bad choices hard to do. Make the things you want to do super convenient, even in small ways, and you will be much more likely to do them. Hold yourself accountable. You might share your goals with a friend, with your spouse, or on social media. Write down your goals and check in with yourself and others to see how you are doing. Accountability can go a long way toward helping us make the good choices we want to make. Set goals that are S.M.A.R.T. Your goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-based. Each of these is a key ingredient to defining new habits you will want to stick with!

Let's get started.

Hey, girlfriends. How are you? How's your week going? I hope you're getting a great start to this week. I'm pre-recording some of these shows, so I don't know exactly where you're going to be when you're listening to this. But I'm recording this inside of the month of May to get prepared to be working ahead just a little bit because my daughter is getting married, May 26th, and I have so much on my plate between now and then.

1:02.0

So I'm happy to be taking this time a little bit here and to focus on you guys here in my

1:07.4

girlfriend's podcast and all the ways that we can connect here about the things that really

1:12.3

matter about our health, about our wellness, about our family relationships inside of parenting

1:18.6

and marriage. And this week's topic is something that kind of covers all of those things.

1:24.2

I was intrigued. So I was intrigued by an email that was sent to me by listener Aaron

1:28.9

recently. And this is kind of what prompted me to take on this topic today. Let me just share

1:33.2

with you what Aaron sent me. So Aaron sent in her email. Hi, Danielle. She wrote a little bit about

1:38.3

what's going on with her three-year-old. Erin, no, I'm praying for you with that situation,

1:42.2

but that's not today's topic. I'm just taking the end of her email here. She says, I really love listening to your podcast because I feel like

1:47.9

they make me a better person or at least want to be a better person. I sometimes lack motivation

1:53.2

to follow through on the things I know I should be doing in my parenting and taking care of my

1:57.7

health and in my marriage. I'm not sure what it says about my personality type,

2:01.6

but I feel like the easy part is knowing what I should be doing, and the hard part is actually doing it.
