Welcome to Manager Tools. Today's show How to Handle Public Disagreement Part 1. Now for years we've been hearing about how important collaboration is right that it's

important to work with rather than manage your team. Yeah yeah you don't

like that you that's right yeah no. No, I mean look you're always the manager right? I mean did you ever think when you were a manager when you were an executive that you go down and brainstorm with your team and we're all just equal here now. We're all brainstorming equally?

Well, we were brainstorming but we were. Yeah, right, right. Yeah. Well, we weren't equals. I was always the manager, right? I mean, you don't just take your manager

hat off and put it off on the table, say, hey, I'm not the manager anymore for the next

five minutes why we collaborate or brainstorm. So you're always the manager.

Look, I think collaboration is really super important. I just think collaboration and management go hand in hand, and you're always the manager when you're the manager.

You never get to take off that hat, and collaborating is

you can still be managing. And sometimes you have to put, I don't say you put that hat aside, but sometimes you're going to take a little bit of a backseat because you want to get input for your folks.

During brainstorm, for example, you want folks to input for your folks. During brainstorm, for example,

you want folks to be candid and frank, right?

You want to encourage that from your directs.

Right.

Otherwise, you don't have that free exchange of ideas.

Yeah, you're totally right. Yeah.

Okay, so let's, we were talking about this earlier and I'm

to share with folks an experience I had a few weeks ago,

manager I was working with wanted to do just that, wanted to have an

open collaborative meeting, they're brainstorming some ideas, right?

And this manager was pretty darn good, because in the course of the meeting, they're brainstorming.

It was an official brainstorming session, but they were kicking around ideas and sharing
