Hello everyone, welcome back to the Epic Gardening podcast. My name is Kevin, the founder of Epic

0:06.1

gardening.com, and today we are talking about those beautiful red berries that everyone loves to grow and eat strawberries.

0:15.1

Specifically, how do we fertilize strawberry plants? For me, one of the ways I know summer has started is when the strawberries start fluting.

0:26.4

Fruiting, sorry. We grow the most common type of strawberry June bearing over here,

0:32.1

but whatever you grow, knowing how and when to fertilize

0:35.6

strawberries is key to getting a massive harvest. So let's get into it. How do we

0:42.4

fertilize strawberry plants? Strawberries in general are a pretty

0:46.3

resilient fruit and not too too hard to grow. But making sure you take care of them is tantamount to getting a really quality harvest.

They need to be planted in an area that gets at least six hours of full sun and in soil that is very well draining.

1:06.0

Needs a lot of organic matter because they are decently heavy feeders and they need to be watered pretty regularly. They don't like moist wet soil, but they also

1:16.7

don't like extremely dry soil, so that just means that you need to water them on a very consistent

1:22.0

basis and watch them carefully.

1:25.0

Finally, how do we fertilize these guys?

1:28.0

They need a lot of nitrogen early on in spring, which is basically right now, and again in late fall, as they send out a lot of runners

1:37.2

and start producing a lot of berries. Ideally, wherever you end up planting your strawberries, you'll have already amended and prepared the soil with some compost or manure, so you don't have to add a lot of extra fertilizer.

1:51.0

Otherwise, if you do need to add fertilizer, you can use a standard 10-10-

1:56.7

or if you're growing organically, there's a lot of different options there as well.

2:00.8

But if you are using a 10 10

2:03.2

10 fertilizer, a good rule of thumb is to add 1 pound per 20 foot row of

2:09.4

strawberries and you'll add that 1 pound per 20 foot row one month after you plant them.

2:17.0

If you have strawberries that are over a year old,

2:20.0

you'll probably want to fertilize once a year after the plant has produced its fruit.
