Today we are asking a question as old as time. Can you eat crab apples? I know it's an odd question, but it's

one that's asked by gardeners around the world and everyone seems not to know the answer to it.

So let's go ahead and answer it for you right now.

First, what is a crab apple?

Well, believe it or not, Henry David Thoreau has an essay called

wild apples. Didn't know that until I did some research, but within this essay he

says, the apple tree has been celebrated by the Hebrews, Greeks, Romans, and Scandinavians.

Some have thought that the first human pair were tempted by its fruit.

Goddesses are fabled to have contended for it. Dragons were set to watch it, and

heroes were employed to pluck it. Clearly the apple has a storied history in human history. Domestic apples came from

Kazakhstan originally and they've been around for more than 6,000 years.

Most of the apples we know today, the popular ones

like Gala, Fuji, Pink Lady, are all hybridized

from two originals, Red delicious and golden delicious. Domestic

apples in comparison to wild apples, also known as crab apples, are typically

large and sweet.

So what does a crab apple look like?

Well, the term crab apple does not actually refer to a specific species.

It's merely a reference to the size,

as wild apples are usually small.

Their mature colors run from red to orange to yellow.
