Hi, I'm Dave. Let's take a walk. Walking is one of the best things you can do for your physical,

emotional, and mental health. But it's also one of the hardest things that you'll do, creating a walking

habit so that you're doing it every day, day after day, week after week, month after month,

year after year. Today I want to talk about creating a daily walking habit. If you're

brand new to this podcast and you don't yet have a habit, maybe you have a

history of what I call fitness fails, which I know can sound kind of harsh, but I

think most of us have experienced this. I know that I have, where we have said,

yep, this is the time I'm going to begin exercising and it's going to stick. And whatever the fitness

activity is, we get started, we're excited, maybe a few days in, we're like, yeah, it's going to work this time.

And then we get a weekend, two weeks in, that initial enthusiasm and motivation is gone.

And we start looking for excuses.

And the habit is never created.

So five things you can do starting today to create a daily walking habit. Number one, start small. Ten thousand steps is not small. 10,000 steps is not small.

If you've considered walking consistently, walking every day, you've probably heard the 10,000 steps a day should be your goal.

And 10,000 steps is a good goal.

I have no problem with 10,000 steps,

aiming for 10,000 steps, but it's a terrible starting goal. Because on average, and I've heard

different numbers, but on average we move about 4,000 steps a day. Without thinking about it, without any intentionality,

just living our lives, the average person walks about 4,000 steps a day. To go from 4,000 to 10,000

requires about an extra hour of walking every day.

And when you're not used to that much walking, it's really hard.
