Summary

Have you ever left a meeting thinking: everyone talked, but nothing was achieved? Chances are that people were listening to each other, just not in the same way. Listening experts Maegan Stephens and Nicole Lowenbraun unpack the four different ways to listen, sharing a practical framework that could change how you respond, build trust and get results — starting with just one simple question. In the classroom, I like to give my students a listening exercise.

0:04.0

I split them up in pairs.

And they're here to tell us that anyone can learn

1:13.4

how to be a great listener if we figure out how to prioritize the needs of who we're talking to.

1:19.5

They're doing away with the concept of active listening and bringing us instead adaptive listening,

1:26.3

and they're giving us four different ways to do it. Then after the

1:30.5

talk, how can you best identify the needs of your conversation partner? But first, a quick break.

1:41.6

And now, Megan Stevens and Nicole Lohenbronn take the TED stage.
