Summary

Today on the podcast is Oregon Duck, Maddy Elmore!

Maddy has quickly established herself over the past year as one of the top runners in the NCAA. She's run three school records over the past few months. In December she broke the indoor mark in the 3,000 with her time of 8:50.43. She then anchored the distance medley relay to a time of 10:47.50 during the Razorback Invitational in January.

And then, just a few short weeks ago, Maddy broke the 39-year-old program record in the women's 5,000 meters with her victory in 15 minutes 15.79 seconds during the Stanford Invitational meet in Stanford, California.

Her previous best was 16:11.77.

This season, Maddy is looking to continue to turn heads and surprise people with her record-breaking performances.

Before her time at Oregon, she ran for South Eugene High School where she was the 2019 OSAA 6A state champion at 1500 meters.

In today's conversation, Maddy discusses her upbringing in the sport, her decision to almost entirely step away from it, how Shalane Flanagan brought back her love for it, her record-breaking performances, and much more!

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to another episode of the Running Effect podcast with Dominic Schleeder.

0:07.2

I'm your host Dominic, and today on the podcast, I am joined by Oregon Duck and Oregon school record holder, Maddie Elmore.

0:14.7

Maddie has a really awesome story.

0:16.4

She actually almost stepped away from the sport a few years ago.

0:19.0

But when her new coach, Shalane Flanagan,

0:22.0

stepped in, she figured she would keep giving it a try. And since then, she's been on an absolute

0:27.3

terror. Over the past few months, she set three school records. In December, she broke the indoor mark

0:32.3

in the 3K with her time of 850. She then anchored the DMR to a time of 1047. And then most recently,

0:39.4

just a few weeks ago, Maddie broke the 39-year-old program record in the woman's 5K with a

0:44.2

victory of 15 minutes and 15 seconds during the Stanford Invitational Meet. What makes that mark

0:50.9

all the more impressive is that her previous PR was 1611, so almost a minute

0:55.4

PR in one race, which is absolutely remarkable. Maddie is sure one athlete to look out for

1:01.2

in the coming months. Before we hop into today's episode, I would greatly appreciate it if you give

1:06.4

us a follow and a five-star review on Spot of Podcasts. And also consider sharing today's episode with

1:12.2

a friend, a family member, a teammate, someone who you think would find value and benefit from it.

1:17.3

My only last note for you is our podcast is now on YouTube. It's been something that I've been

1:22.2

wanting to do for quite some time. I've left a link to our YouTube channel for the podcast

1:26.5

in the show notes, or you can just

1:28.0

go on YouTube and search the Running Effect podcast. If you prefer to watch today's episode, also

1:33.8

please consider subscribing there as well. With all of those notes aside, I hope you all

1:38.8

enjoy my conversation with the one and only, Maddie Elmore. Maddie Elmore.
