Summary

Travel doesn’t just show you the world — it shows you yourself. And sometimes, what you discover is not what you expected. In this powerful conversation, journalist and travel creator Nicole Phillip joins Kwame to explore the intersection of identity, race, storytelling, and courage. She opens up about her life-changing study abroad experience in Italy — the joy she imagined, the racism she didn’t expect, and the moment she realized she wasn’t alone when hundreds of thousands of people reached out to say, “This happened to me too.” Nicole also shares the bold leap from ABC News and The New York Times to becoming a full-time travel creator — walking away from corporate America, trusting her voice, and building a platform rooted in truth, research, and authenticity. You know what's funny, Nicole? So I did, so when I was getting started speaking, I started to do this exercise where I would say, all right, I want to see, I want to kind of test myself. And so what I would do is when I'm driving, I would just see random things and I would force myself to talk about that random thing for two minutes, nonstop. As like, okay, grass. Well, let me tell you about grass. Like, as if I'm presenting on this, you know, I see a cow. I'm in Ohio. So I see a cow. I'm like, well, let me tell you about cow. You know, and it's, it's funny to see how a lot of these little training things that I would do from way back when are helping me today when it comes to public speaking.
