Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of biological factors characterized by abdominal obesity,

dyslipidemia, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes.

When people have metabolic syndrome, there is an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, arthritis,

chronic kidney disease, schizophrenia, and several types of cancer, as well as early death.

The connection between metabolic syndrome and an increased risk of illness has been described

The prevalence of obesity among U.S. adults has steadily increased since the 1990s and is now

at epidemic proportions, with over two-thirds of U.S. adults either overweight or obese. Currently, the prevalence of
