Summary

In this bitesize episode, I speak to gut health expert Tim Spector about the link between the microbiome and mental health. Tim explains how the bacteria in your gut produce key brain chemicals like serotonin and GABA — and how what you eat affects stress, mood, energy and even sleep.

We also talk about the hidden signs of poor gut health, why 'five-a-day' advice isn’t enough anymore, and how ultra-processed foods are quietly reshaping our national health. I share a personal story of how fermented foods helped turn around my own anxiety — and why the gut is a good place to start if you're feeling off balance.

And one nutritionist fortunately suggested I try kefir. So I got into making homemade

kefir and then from that kombucha increased my fibre. And the difference it made both in terms

of my gut, but also my mental health

you're saying as well, pretty much, well, heart health, chronic health, all of this is hugely

impacted by what's going on in your gut. So really, there's not many things that

1:30.0

you can do to move the dial more than get your gut in order. I think that's right. As an

individual, that's correct. You know, the food choices we make every day are probably the most

And so we haven't, and that message hasn't really got out to us.

We've been told that one size fits all and that you follow general, you know, five a day
